GMT MASTER

Designed for Pan Am Airways pilots and navigators in 1954, the Oyster Perpetual Date GMT Master is a classic member of the Rolex Professional Watch Collection. GMT stands for Greenwich Mean Time, and the watch's 24-hour display fourth hand complication can be used with its rotatable 24-hour scale bezel to read a second time zone.

ROLEX 6542 GMT STEEL COMPLETE SET BOX PAPERS EVERYTHING 1959

This Rolex GMT Master reference 6542 is 100% pristine and original. In addition, this has to be the most complete original 6542 in existence. The watch has its box with two-color top that represents the Day/Night color contrasting bezel, all original hang tags, chronometer certificate, product pamphlet, and Rolex warranty documents in original cellophane envelope. This is an extraordinary example, in all respects, of an important vintage Rolex watch as well as a part of aviation history.

The Rolex GMT Master is one of the legendary Rolex sport models, having been designed as a tool watch for commercial pilots. Being a Rolex, which is to say accurate and durable, the GMT Master was quickly adopted by military pilots and astronauts alike. The GMT Master allows the wearer to keep track of local time with the regular hour and minutes hands while the red 24 hour hand tracks GMT (now called UTC time) which pilots use as a universal reference time. The reference 6542 is the first GMT Master model that Rolex produced and is highly collectable when all parts are original to the watch (as is the case with this watch).

Original no crown guards never polished stainless steel case measures 39mm diameter by 13mm thick. Original bezel with original Bakelite insert, which is extremely rare after 50 years of service. The vast majority of 6542 GMTs have some form of replacement bezel and insert at this point in time. Not so this watch. Bezel turns freely and with the proper amount of resistance. Crystal is plastic with Cyclops date magnifier (the Cyclops magnifier was an option on 6542s). Screw down crown operates smoothly. Serial number 482XXX dates production to 1959.

Original untouched Gilt Gloss Chapter dial. The gilt print and the luminous and hands have all aged together to attain a lustrous and rich patina which is gorgeous. The hands are original and note that the red 24 hour hand has a small arrow tip which is correct for the 6542. Date aperture at 3 o’clock.

Original movement is the automatic winding Rolex Caliber 1030 with 25 jewels and adjusted to five positions and temperature. This movement is a C.O.S.C. Certified Chronometer and is clean and running.

Bracelet is a riveted stretch Rolex Oyster with 1-64 date code.

This is an opportunity which is not likely to be repeated.
