A classic dress watch, the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust was the first wristwatch with a date function when it was introduced in 1945. Later, the Datejust became the first watch to be equipped with a cyclops crystal above the date window, which magnifies the date for easier reading. Because the date changes right at midnight, it was given the name Datejust for 'just in time" date wheel progression.
Here is, in my opinion, the most classic and most versatile watch ever: the Rolex Datejust. Being a Datejust, the watch has a date (which is more convenient than you imagine, until you wear a watch without a date). This vintage watch is decidedly classy in 18k gold and, like your author, dates to 1964.
Original 18k case is 36mm diameter. Fluted 18k original bezel is very crisp and mint. Plastic crystal. Screw down crown operating flawlessly.
Original champagne pie-pan dial has early style applied 18k hour markers and original golden Alpha style hands.
Rolex automatic winding Caliber 1560 which is a 26 jewel C.O.S.C. Certified Chronometer, adjusted in 5 positions and to temperature. Movement is pristine and running.
New modern brown alligator Patek Philippe strap with Rolex buckle.
Never polished untouched original vintage Rolex Datejust reference 1625 also known as a “Thunderbird”, with extremely rare original black dial and original box and papers showing retail sales date in June 1963. The Thunderbird moniker comes from the bezel, which is a bi-directional count-up timing device. The condition of the bezel (and case) means everything. A bezel that has been eroded by wear or polishing detracts from both the look and value of the watch. The fine engraving and numerals in relief are perfectly crisp as is the rest of the case.
Unpolished 18k gold case is in mint+ condition with original case lines and sharp edges. The all important Thunderbird bezel is the best condition gold version we have seen. Crystal is plastic. The screw down crown is operating perfectly.
Original untouched black dial with gold markers. Original hands. Date at 3 o’clock.
Original automatic winding Rolex Caliber 1570 with 26 jewels and adjusted to temperature and in 5 positions. This movement is a C.O.S.C. Certified Chronometer and is clean and running.

This watch is amazing and complete with original Rolex box and papers.
The Rolex Datejust reference 6305 is known as the "Ovettone", Italian for "Big Egg", and was produced between 1953 and 1957 only. It is highly prized by Rolex collectors. Finding one of these rare watches with original black dial is exceedingly rare.
18k rose gold, 36mm diameter by 13mm thick, domed plastic crystal. Crisp original solid rose gold reeded bezel. Original screw down crown. Case is in immaculate condition. Serial number 948XXX dates this watch to 1953. Model is engraved as BREVET 6305.
